 A B O U T

I hear the music from outside as I walk toward the club. The club owner is sitting on his stool outside the door carding Id’s and greeting his customers as we go in. We enter the club and see many familiar faces. Everyone is dressed to impress. There isn’t much space to move around. We walk to the bar to get our drinks, turn around and there he is, Dj Mega. He is like a king on his throne and the people on the dance floor are his subjects. He is in complete control of the crowd.

The light show is going, the disco ball is sparkling and the dance floor is packed. People have their drinks in their hands and their bodies are moving to the music. The music and the people are one, joined together by the beats of the song. Mega loves what he does. Entertaining the people makes him happy. He says to me, “I love to make people dance. That’s what I do, I make people dance.”

When asking some of his followers what it is that they love about him, I received many responses.

Bj tells me, “DJ Mega is by far the best DJ around. He can adapt to any crowd and will play any kind of music for you. He is so energetic when he is DJing, it gets the crowd bumping. He knows how to read the crowd for what kind of music is working.  When Mega is DJing and I go out to the club, I don't get much of a break from the dance floor. He knows what I like and plays my favorite song(s). Bj laughs, I enjoy myself whenever I go out and Mega is doing his thing on the mic. It’s such a good time. I am a huge fan.”

Katy said, “I have heard Mega’s internet show, I have heard him on his radio show, and also in a club setting. His ability to accommodate to different groups of people is fantastic. He gets a room that is dead, up and off its feet, and can maintain the energy. That is hard to find in certain settings in Vermont. People love his personality and his dedication to his profession. Music is his passion and it comes through when he performs.

Patty states,” The first time that I heard Mega play was at Redmoon. I went out with my girlfriends that night and we had such a great time. We got drunk and danced the night away. I try to make it out whenever he is performing because it is such a good time. He is by far the best DJ in the area. There is no other DJ out there that can show him up.”

Mega comes from a long line of DJ’s. He was introduced to DJing at an early age. His father was a disco DJ in Manhattan. His brother, Dwayne, and his friend, Rob would host block parties and house parties. His father taught him how to set up and break down the equipment. He was responsible for the maintenance of cleaning the equipment and the records. His father taught him about disco/soul music, artist such as, Donna Summers, Luther Vandross, and Lionel Ritchie. One moment he remembers, from when he was younger, was that his grandmother owned a bar and his father would set up the old 45’s for him to play. His father would get drunk and Mega would run the show. His friend Rob, taught him how to blend the music and make it flow. Rob and Dwayne would take him to house parties and he would be the only twelve year old around a bunch of adults. His job would be to set up and tear down equipment for them and they would pay him twenty dollars. This was his first job where he made money.

When he was younger, he would get up early to do a paper route with his brother, Dwayne and his friend, Rob. If he wanted to learn to DJ from them, he had to help out with the paper route. When they were done with the paper route they would walk down to White Castle’s and get cheese burgers. He would get tired from this, but he was determined to learn how to DJ. He was happy being around his brother and Rob. He looked up to them and wanted to be like them.

His passion for music only increased. At the age of thirteen he started to buy records and make mix tapes. He would go to the music stores in the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens to sell his mix tapes. His favorite place to sell his mix tapes was Beatstreet Records. If you watch Jay-z’s video ninety nine problems, Beatstreet Records is featured in the video. Selling mix tapes is competitive. He competed with DJ’s Fedel,  Dynomite, Pro-Killa, and Fire Lion. Due to selling his mix tapes, he was contacted to do a radio show on an independent station by the age of fifteen. WPAT, 930 AM is the radio station and was located in Brooklyn. The radio station is located a few blocks from where Biggie would sell drugs to make it by, before he got discovered and became the Hip-Hop icon he is today. The radio show was from 8-10pm, Monday through Friday. Mega did the radio show with another person, DJ Pro Killa. They would give away free cd’s. He would receive a lot of promotional stuff, like free tickets to see Jamaican artists, t-shirts, music. He did this radio show for about a year.

After his radio show ended, Mega was picked up at NYU to do an internship for their radio station, WNYU, 88.1 FM. He was the engineer for this station. He would make sure the levels were correct for the audio. He would listen to the records to make sure they were edited and free of curse words. He would receive in the record shipments from Jamaica. He would handle the phone calls for the people he worked for. He would occasionally play a show for the station.

When his internship was over he went to finish his high school education at Job Corp, where he majored in basic computers. He took a few years off from DJing to get his life a little more organized. He learned a trade while he was there. When he graduated from Job Corp, he furthered his education at Buffalo State, where he majored in computers. Due to family deaths it was hard for him to continue at Buffalo State, so he took some time off from school.

He was offered to move to California or Albany to get away from the pressures of New York City. He chose to move to Albany. While he was in Albany he met DJ – JB at Sneeky Pete’s. He was trying to get a DJ job there. He was informed by JB that nobody knows him and he has to go to Glensfalls, NY to get known. He did make his way up to Glensfalls and went to a club called Tilley’s where he met DJ Marky Mark. While he was at Tilley’s, Marky Mark would give him a half an hour every Thursday night to play his Reggae/Dancehall music set. Being at Tilley’s, he was able to make new contacts with other DJ’s such as, DJ Jeter, DJ Willow, and DJ Vince 1. Through these contacts he was able to perform as far north as Burlington, VT.

Later on he moved to Rutland, VT, where he was offered a job with Phatkat Production. He would work for the owner DJ Vince 1. He met Kris Kul and DJ Eric C. He would perform at the local clubs in Vermont and travel to New Hampshire. As time went on, Mega broke out on his own. He created his own company, Megasound International. He continued to work at local clubs like Redmoon, Sidelines, Wobbely Barn, Charity’s, Metropolis, Molesi, and The Beacon. He would travel to New Hampshire to work at McCue’s, The Railroad, and Club Electra. He has opened shows for such reggae artists, Mavado and Serani. Currently he is working with Kris Kul of 2Kul Entertainment at The Local. He is working for himself under Megasound International at Magoos. He has The Riddim Ryde Show being broadcasted on WIUV, 107.7 FM and Fixation Radio.

Though he prefers to DJ urban music, he has branched out to all genres of music to make himself more versatile. He is known for his remixes and his fearlessness to try something new. He is up to date on new music. He likes to be the first to play something that hasn’t been heard before. He loves to play with the crowd and get them pumped. He is well known for his saying, “There is one thing about Mega, I never do a bad job.”
